A Good Weekend

First, we should celebrate the success of Matt and Dad's fence-fixin' project. Here are the neighbor's cattle on the other side of the fence and our super-slow but cheap lawn mowers on the other. We're hoping they'll stay on their side and not re-enact the 2008 massacre of our yard, yard decorations and most likely our trimmer mower!

I had some good friends from elementary school come visit this weekend which was pretty fun. It was also my aunt and uncle's 50th wedding anniversary so we stopped in the park for their celebration. I managed to bring my camera case but not our camera so here's some pics I stole from family : )

And here's Me, Matt and his aunt.

And James changing a diaper in the park
And Matt asleep in his stroller (which is how he spent most of the day when he wasn't fussing or asleep in his wrap). Knock on wood this fussy streak has ended because today he's been a totally different and happy baby, unlike the past week or so.
All in all, an excellent weekend.

Here's Matthew on his one month-iversary (Friday) in with his new geek gear from Uncle Matt.

What we've been doing since I sent my laptop in for repair : )

Well, Matthew's spent another week doing what he does best: eating, sleeping, pooping. He's starting to spend a little longer each day awake, but without real control of his neck, head, and hands he's pretty happy for about 10 mins. then manages to scare himself and decides to go back to the three things he's the best at. Behold the power of modern technology as Matthew Skyped with grandma and grandpa the other night and across 1,800 miles, grandma and grandpa could hear Matt poop. Oh glorious modern technology : ) Anyway, here's the faces Matt likes to make when he's awake:

And here's him actually sleeping in his bassinet:

Amazingly, he sleeps really well at night in his cradle, but during the day he would rather sleep anywhere else . . .like on dad's chest . . .

. . . or on mom's lap . . .

. . . or on a blanket next to mom on the couch.

And here's Sky warning me I'm out of the running for Mother of the Year for letting Matthew sleep on the couch : )

And since our pets are feeling slightly jaded by the newest addition, we got the cats a new laser pointer (tons of fun!) and got a new scratching post (mostly in the hopes Iris would finally use it). Iris likes to use it as a bed, but Olivia is mesmerized by the new catnip:

And since we gave one of our recliner/rockers away to grandma, June and the cats have to fight over the remaining chair. June seems to always win.

Showing off my awesome family and their horses

So, I'm just going to take the opportunity to show off some great pics from my aunt of my uncle and cousin with their mustangs. They were in the "Extreme Mustang Makeover" and had 100 days to train their mustangs for competition. Here's my uncle and his horse. They placed 6th which wasn't too bad considering he had a mustang who was a real pain in the butt.

Here's a pic of a training exercise they did to prepare and soften the horse.
Here's my cousin who placed 4th in the competition with his horse Quirt. He admits his horse started out more gentle than his dad's but he did quite a lot of awesome work with him.
Here he his standing on his mustang in competition cracking a bullwhip . . . something I don't think I'll ever do on a truly broke horse, let alone a pretty fresh mustang. Anyway, his horse was the top sold which made for its own pretty nice prize for him!

One minute of Baby face

Here's another video to tide the grandparents over of Matthew's silly faces. Hopefully when I get my laptop back we'll have video taken with our new camera : )
My aunt sent a pic of James branding the cow (now named "Frank the Flank"), down in the dirt and tied, the good old fashioned way.

An here's Matthew in his way too cute overalls ready to help with branding maybe next year.

Meanwhile, my laptop is being shipped off to have the optical drive repaired so no new pics for about a week. To tide everyone over here's a pic of Matthew and I's boring days now that James went back to work. Laundry time:

Matthew sleeping under the crab apple tree while I hang out laundry.
The woodpecker that decided to hang out above Matthew as we did laundry.
Here are the chunks of tree the woodpecker dropped on Matthew as he slept
And here's Sky as he stood guard for dropped diapers and other trespassers on the property. Sadly he did not see it to be his duty to take care of the woodpecker.

It's a boy!

Meet the newest of new Watsons. He doesn't have a name yet (though we'll take suggestions!), but on Sunday we bought a Holstein steer.
James went to the arena so he could be branded and then our family will keep him for us this winter. They'll get to use him to practice roping while we get used to a new baby in the house. Then next spring, we'll take the steers and put them out to pasture on our grass to eat as much as they want before it's time to become next year's steaks and burgers. It's really a win-win situation, especially if James and I learn to rope while we're at it. Here are some roping shots of my uncle and cousin:

And here's a shot of Don manning the brander. The arena doesn't have a calf table like was used at the last branding, so my guess was there were not enough extra hands to man the camera during the actual branding process : )

The First Bath!

Now that all pieces have fallen off where appropriate and Matthew's had some busy days it was time for a first bath. Though these two pics make it appear Matthew had a great time . . . (NB: Photos have been edited for Matt's privacy!)

. . . this is how he spent most of the bath. He is not yet a water baby but we'll work on it!
This is Matthew in his PJS and all surrendered after his bath!

Cute Outfits

Here's Matthew in his cow outfit grandpa Ron gave him.

And here he is awkwardly waiting to Skype with grandma and grandpa. He slept through it but apparently grandparents enjoy sleeping babies via video as well. (His cloth diapers make him appear even larger than he is! Don't worry he's not that chunky . . . yet!)

Aside from exploring the world of video conferencing, Matthew is also starting to read the Economist with dad. I'm sure he has well-formed opinions on Boards of Directors in Germany already : )

Here's Matthew in the outfit Uncle Ed and Taryn brought back from their trip to Africa. Too cute and perfect for grandma Dot to enjoy as well!

A few quick pics

Nothing too exciting. Matthew's spending a little more time awake (and a bit more time content by himself awake) but he still sleeps a lot. Here's some pics from his nap this afternoon.

Help! I'm in a baby cage!

Matthew, the thinker.
Please mom, no more pictures!
Too cool Matthew.

A video for grandma and grandpa

Here's a minute of video from Matthew's tummy time the other day for grandma and grandpa . . . he makes some cute facial expressions (as well as having the hiccups as usual!). You can also listen to James as he reads from his magazine.

Matthew's first campfire!

Well, Matthew's been to multiple picnics in the past week with his fabulous extended family . . . but today we took him for a picnic to Worthen Reservoir and he had his first picnic in the mountains with a campfire! Too bad he missed out on the best part. . . S'MORES! Grandma had her first s'more today!
Matthew at least was an excellent s'more supervisor.
Meanwhile, Sky and June dutifully guarded the campsite.

Unfortunately, June continues to struggle with having super-short legs and navigating the leash

Most importantly, we were able to spoil our first baby with some fetch . . . or what looks like a nice doggie cigar : )

When we got home it was time for a big nap . . .
and some pre-season football for Daddy.

More Grandparents are here to spoil!

Grandma and Grandpa Watson arrived on Saturday after Grandma and Grandpa Pozun left. Matthew certainly loves his grandparents.

Apparently while Matthew's away the cats will play.

Also, here's a third attempt at posting the portraits. Go to this site and the studio ID is 11457 and the session ID is 101525. Here's a sneak peek of our handsome man (who looks way too old in this picture for 9 days!!)
